Do You Need a Degree?
Sunday July 29, 2007
Do you need a college degree to get into the music biz? It's a question that comes up time and again, and the truth is, there are no easy answers. If you ask 10 people how they got their foot in the door in the music industry, you are likely to get 10 different answers. Some bands make it by playing live shows - and some bands get access to the live shows that help them make it through contacts they have made while getting their music degree. Some people find their way into the business side of things by volunteering to work for free - packing up CDs to mail, postering the town to promote shows and so on - and some people find their first music industry job via the job placement office at their school. Doesn't really help you make a decision, does it? Well, maybe this will. Berklee College of Music is considered one of THE best music degree programs going, and here, two Berklee types - one a recent grad and one a current student - share their experiences at Berklee and how the school has helped them move towards their music biz goals. Their stories should help you decide what kind of story you want to have, and which road to the music industry is the right one for you.
