boss Tony Wilson never made a fortune in the music business, believe it or not. What he did make, however, was music history. Wilson was a true music industry original - he always did things his own way (even if often that way was a disaster from a business point of view), and he was a fervent champion of independent music. He also had a hand in some major moments that continue to influence music both creatively and on the business side of things - Joy Division, The Hacienda, Madchester, In The City - yep, we have Wilson to thank for all of them. I was lucky enough to meet Wilson a few times, and I was struck dumb at the sight of him. He ignored that and was nice to me anyway. He's always been one of my music heroes, and I think his story is an inspiring example of how you can't always judge music industry success by the bottom line. Learn more
