Music Industry Myths: You Can Do It All Yourself

Don't get me wrong here. I'm a big, big, big believer in making your own way in the music industry. I don't think for a second that you need a huge company behind you to make your music career dreams, whatever they may be, come true. You can accomplish a lot working independently.

What I'm really getting at here is a reality check about the nature of DIY, or the difference between DIY ethos and actually, literally, doing it all yourself. DIY ethos is less about doing it yourself than about doing it with a small group of like minded people. You can share some of the burden of your music career without sacrificing your rights or compromising your control. Don't be fooled into thinking that if you get to the point where you need some extra hands on deck that you're selling out. After all, sticking it to the man is a big job.
