What Happens to Your Demo at a Label?

This question pops up in my email a lot - what happens to your demo when it arrives at a record label (assuming that you've sent a hard copy)? The size of the label plays a big part in how demos are handled, and of course, how quickly they are handled, but the general process is essentially the same from record label to record label.
