The Long Lost Label List

By , About.com GuideSeptember 17, 2009

Follow me on:

Record labels get a lot of flack these days , and while there are some bad apples out there, this whole notion that all record labels are the enemy is a rewriting of music history. If you're trying to make a career in music, be it as a musician or on the business side of things, chances are that there are a few record labels that have inspired you along the way.

If you read this site often, you probably know how much I like to harp on the point that the work that record labels do on releases still matters very much, and if you are going to release your own music, you are essentially becoming your own label. That's my "About.com Guide to Music Careers" side talking. As a music lover, I've gotta tell you, without certain labels getting me excited about both music and the music industry, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. That doesn't mean all of these labels are still around - some great labels have crashed and burned over the years - but their impact on the music industry and music itself is undeniable. So, in their honor, I bring you the Long Lost Label List. These are my top ten picks (at least at the time of writing - does anyone ever really settle on a list like this?).  Which labels would be on your list? Let me know!
