Whether you've got designs on a record deal or not, chances are that sometime in your musical journey, you're going to have to put together a demo to showcase your work. Demos can be incredibly valuable tools, but not if you don't load them up with just the right tracks. Picking those songs can be a real challenge. People have a tendency to make the same sorts of mistakes when they're selecting songs for a demo - putting too many tracks on there, choosing songs with slow openings, picking their seven minute masterpieces and so on and so forth. This kind of stuff simply doesn't make your demo as strong as it needs to be.
Instead, rule number one of picking demo songs is to think like the person receiving your demo. If you're sending your demo to someone, you better believe a long list of other people have done the same thing. You've got a very limited amount of time to make an impact - you may not get more than a 20 second courtesy listen before someone moves on to the next song, so pick your works that grabs listeners instantly, not the ones with long intros.
What else should you keep in mind when getting your demo in order? Find out.
