I just started teaching a new music promotion class at College of Charleston, and yesterday in class, we covered something that seems really basic but I consider really important - writing a good music industry email. I know, I know - you send emails all the time, right? But, when you're trying to promote your music, book a show or otherwise send a "cold email" (if you will), it's not the same thing as replying to your college friend, emailing your professor or even replying to an email in your day job.
Nope, instead, this email is coming into a sure-to-be-overflowing inbox of a complete stranger that you need to convince to do something for you. This email is your first chance to make an impression on someone, so you need to make the most of it. How do you do that? Some good rules of thumb are to give yourself a proper introduction, stay on message and make a call to action. Emails that don't do those things may very well land in the "oh, I'll read that later" folder, or indeed in the dreaded trash can.
