What Should I Wear to a Music Job Interview?

The question of what to wear to a music business job interview brings a very important music industry issue to the forefront - just how "business-y" is this business anyway? This question is one a lot of music biz job seekers ponder, and it's easy to get wrong. Here's the real story - this IS a real business, and conducting yourself as a professional matters. No, everyone in the music industry is not sitting around, hanging out, and listening to records all day. Sorry, but it's true.

Now, as for "professional" dress, well, that depends. Smaller companies, like small indies, tend to have a very casual approach when it comes to office attire. On the other hand, the upper echelon of  major label life may require ye-olde-standard-business-wear. When you're dressing for a job interview, if you know something about the company, try to dress in accordance with the office environment. If you don't, err on the side of being overdressed. Going into an interview looking like you're a serious job seeker will help your case and communicate that you're not one of those types that thinks there's no work involved in a music biz job. Conventional job interview wisdom applies to music industry job interviews.
