This Week in Music News...

Sunday June 22, 2008
Here's your weekly round-up of music news and other stuff you may have missed. Thanks to all of the readers who sent in suggestions, and don't forget, if you have something to share, let me know. And with that, we're off:
  1. I mentioned the Music Business Page last week, and I've got to bring it up again because Doc has this great article about getting an award show internship. Definitely worth a read if you're looking for some hands on music experience. This article is a two parter - you can click on a link to part two at the bottom of the article.
  2. Earlier this week, I wrote about designing cover art, and Michael Goldstein of the RockPoP Gallery got in touch with me to bring up a very good point - graphic artists need to work hard to protect their rights and have clear agreements as to how their images can be used so they don't get the shaft on payday. You'll definitely be seeing more about this on the site in the future, with help from Michael, but for now I wanted to point out Michael's blog where he runs a feature called "Cover Stories" that tells the tales of some of the most iconic album covers, complete with interviews with the people who created them.
  3. Derek Nicoletto of the band Telling on Trixie was one of the people who shared his feeling about working with Sonicbids, and he also let me know about a creative way his band is trying to raise money for their next album. They've started a website appealing for fans to contribute some cash in exchange for being involved in the creative process, like helping with the tracklisting, the cover art and more. They're after $50K, and they're doing incredibly well so far. Learn more on their A Band with a Plan website.
  4. As I say in the Long Lost Labels List - or ok, as I say at least 5 times a week, often there's not a link between how many copies a record sells and how good it is. About.com's Rap Guide Henry Adaso drives home the point in his article How to Buy a (Really) Crappy Rap Album. Funny stuff. By the way, Part Two of the label list is coming this week.
  5. Have you been following the Ice T/Soulja Boy feud? In case you've somehow missed it, Ice T said that Soulja Boy killed hip hop (well, ok, he said some other things that I'm not allowed to write here), and Soulja Boy retaliated with a very long video message - his two major points as far as I could tell were that 1)Ice T was born "before the internet was invented" and 2)Ice T plays a police officer on TV. I'm not sure why Ice T bothered (aside from the fact he has a new album coming out and wants people to talk about him). What's happened with hip hop happens to all genres of music that go from underground to mainstream. Just ask punk, alternative rock, country, etc. From where I'm sitting, artists like Soulja Boy make pop music. I wouldn't sweat it, Ice T. Apples and oranges. There's still good hip hop out there, it just usually goes tragically under the radar with all of the other good music. Me, I like Smacks.
That's it for this week! Get in touch with your comments and any news you have to share.
