How To Find Wedding Singer Jobs

By , About.com Guide

How do you find wedding singer jobs? Getting work as a wedding singer requires a lot of upfront groundwork, but once you establish yourself, your client base will grow by word of mouth. The trick is to always be prepared with music and references to sell yourself to potential clients. With a little hard work, you'll find that searching for wedding singer bookings will turn into wedding bookings searching for you.

Time Required: N/A

Here's How:

  1. Prepare Your Materials

To sell yourself as a wedding singer, you'll need samples of your singing. Prepare a vocal demo for potential clients. Your demo should include a few songs that show a bit of your range. Make sure you select appropriate songs - this is a wedding, remember, so choose your music accordingly. Love songs, hymns, popular dance songs - these sorts of songs make good choices.

Have physical copies of your demo with your contact information written on the front of the CD. Your demo should also be digitally available, too, which brings us to the next point - your website. Have a basic website with music available to stream so that client can stumble across you as they search for a singer for their wedding.

  2. Approach Local Bridal Publications

Check the wedding supplement of your local paper and any other local publications that either have a bridal/wedding announcement section or are dedicated to weddings. Do they have classified ads for local wedding industry professionals? Get yourself listed there by following the instructions in the paper. Hold off on shelling out for a larger ad, though, until you have a few gigs under your belt. You'll get more bang for your buck if you can highlight some achievements in your ad.

Also use these publications to see how the competition is working. What do their ads look like? What kind of services are they advertising? Take note of what they are doing that is working. Likewise, browse these publications for local wedding planners - they could turn out to be your best friends.

  3. Contact Wedding Planners

Wedding planners always need wedding singers. Sometimes they work exclusively with a few select singers and other times they simply keep a list of singer contacts on hands, but whatever the set-up, you want as many wedding planner allies as you can get. Call the planners, ask for an appointment, deliver your demo and be prepared to audition, if necessary. Wow them, and the work will keep rolling in as they book you over and over again for their clients' weddings.

Tips:

  1. Have business cards ready to stick up anywhere you happen to see a bulletin board or other posting area for local businesses. Being a wedding singer is a very local beast, so always be ready to take one more opportunity to get your word out to the local community. Coffee shops, cafes, churches, bridal boutiques, tuxedo rental businesses, limo rental companies, halls - all of these places are great locations to post your business information.

  2. Ask satisfied customers for references. Make it easy for them by providing them with a short comment card or form they can complete, and get their permission to use their names. Continually update your website with this information as you perform more and more weddings so new clients always have an up to date resume to view. Also be prepared to present these references directly to new clients.
