University of Hertfordshire and Creative Industries:
The University of Hertfordshire (or Herts, for short) is positioning itself to be a go-to school for students interested in careers in the creative industries. Their new state of the art digital media building is home to all students studying in the 17 majors of their School of Film, Music and Media. The school is within easy reach of London, which allows students to tap into the thriving creative industries scene there for work experience. While University of Herts is aiming to develop all of their creative industry degree programs further, it is their new music management degree that is receiving the biggest push.
Music and Entertainment Industry Management Degree:
Although many UK schools have music related degree programs, University of Herts is unique in that their Music and Entertainment Industry Management program brings together specific music related business and legal issues with general music education. The distinction here is this degree is not made up of general knowledge courses about the music industry coupled with generic business or legal courses - the foundational business courses are all thematically related to the music industry. University of Herts was one of the first to take this approach in the UK, and it remains one of the few schools anywhere to do this.
Three Degree Pathways:
Under the Music and Entertainment Industry Management curriculum, students can choose three concentrations, or "pathways":
- Studio
- Music Management
- Classical Music Industry
Paying for University of Hertfordshire:
All UK and EU students can attend University of Herts for free for their first year. Tuition varies after that depending on the amount of funding available to the program that year, with a maximum fee of just over 3,000 GBP per year. For international students, tuition is approximately 7,000 GBP per year. There are scholarship opportunities available to international students, but these change yearly depending on departmental funding. International students should also seek funding opportunities in their home country for studying abroad.
UH Recordings:
University of Herfordshire has its own student run record label, UH Recordings. Students are involved in every part of the label process, from working in the studio with the artists during the recording to promoting the finished product. The releases are distributed via the university through online sales, which are also managed by the students.
