Soma Records - Early Days:
Soma Records grew out of the success of DJ combo Slam - made up of Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle. Slam got their start in 1988 hosting a club night a Glasgow's Fury Murray's nightclub. Their mix of funk, dance, and electronica music drew a dedicated following, and soon Tennet's Lager came along and offered to sponsor a tour. Slam's involvement with Tennet's culminated in an appearance at the T in the Park festival. That appearance helped Slam earn recogniation outside of Scotland.
On the back of the success of Slam, McMillan and Meikle got together with the other partners and formed Soma in 1991.
Soma Records Artists:
Naturally, Soma has been the home for Slam over the years, and the label is also well known for releasing singles by Daft Punk that would later appear on that group's hugely successful 1997 album Homework. Other artists who have released music on Soma include:
