Multiple Rights Deals

By Heather McDonald, About.com

Definition:

Multiple rights deals, aka MMR deals or more commonly, 360 deals, are music industry contracts in which a musician gives multiple sets of rights to one company/individual in exchange for them working on multiple parts of a musician's career. In other words, a label that signs a musician to multiple rights contract might be involved in recording, promotion, distribution, booking and touring and merch, when traditionally labels would have just handled responsibilities - and earned money on - rights associated with the distribution of recorded music.

Multiple rights deals have exploded in popularity, thanks to labels trying to find new revenue streams as album sales have fallen. For more information, see 360 deals.
