Do I Still Need to Press CDs?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Do I Still Need to Press CDs?
Answer:

If you are self releasing your record, do you still need to press CDs to make it work? The answer really depends on your resources. It is possible to sell and promote digital releases without any physical product. If cash is tight, going down this road can be a great way to get your music out there.

But - while there is certainly nothing WRONG with going for a digital only release, and while it may be true that music may be heading in that direction - there are still benefits to having a CD pressing:

  • CD sales may be falling, but people still buy more CDs than they do music downloads, and MP3 sales are increasing, but at a slower pace than CD sales are declining.

  • Some radio stations and journalists still want to receive promos on CD rather via email attachment/EPK.
If your budget allows for a physical pressing, CDs can be handy to have. Learn more about the pros and cons of CDs:
