How Do You Promote Your Music?
I've been playing coffee shops and open mic nights in my area for 8 or 9 years, but the main focus of my self-promotion is on posting home videos on YouTube.
Do You Release Your Own Music? Do You Want a Deal?
I write, record, and produce all of my own material, having more than ten albums that have gone unreleased for lack of sufficient capital and connections. I would be open to a deal with the right people - that is, people who want to make music with profit being a sweetener.
Tips and Tricks
- Here's my main tip: the music industry is less about music than it is about industry. If you want to make a living as a musician, be prepared to give up part of your artistic integrity, if not all of it. At one time, music was art. No longer. Now, it is advertising. The quality of your music does not matter if it isn't wrapped in a pretty package. Music industry people are more concerned with having their massive egos fellated and seeing their wallets' girth continue to increase than they are about making any contribution to art, so don't expect any of them to care whether or not you're actually creative.
