What Genre Music Do You Write?

I'm a Christian singer/songwriter/acoustic guitarist, and I write Christian lyrics with Country Blues and Rockabilly music. I pretty much stick to this, but I do, at times write Old-Time, Country Gospel lyrics and music.

How Do You Promote Your Work?

I use the internet to network and join in on various forums and/or discussions. I send emails, make phone calls, and when I can afford it, I go to seminars, conventions, and conferences. I also try to let everybody I talk to, know that I want to help them or do anything I can for them, regardless of whether or not it is music related, or whether or not I will get anything out of it myself. I never try to act like I'm someone that I'm not, and I treat everybody the way I would like to be treated.

Advice

  • I don't think that I'm qualified to offer any tips on songwriting, having never had any well-known successes or acomplishments yet, myself. I will say that I believe a songwriter should write about what he or she knows, and can clearly get across to other people.
  • Listen to other people's music or songs, all the time, and pay attention to the song's structure, and poetic meter, and practice trying to put your own words to that meter.
  • Learn to pay attention to everything you see, such as an old barn out in a field, an especially beautiful sunrise or sunset, and listen to people talk, w/out eavesdropping.
