How Do You Promote Your Work?

You've got to have a website where people can hear your music. Then network with other musicians to figure out what they're doing--a great way to do this is to go to open mics--even if you're not a performer, you'll meet musicians. In order to succeed people have to know you exist--not just fans, but people who have connections to other musicians, producers, lawyers, managers, promoters. It's all about networking, branding yourself with a logo, and promoting.

Advice

  • Get a notebook, fill it with songs, repeat. Write! Every new song is a potential hit. But if it's not gelling move onto the next song--if you really like it you can always come back.
  • Record ASAP. Not a $5,000 demo, but invest in an H2 digital recorder and just get it down so you remember it.
  • Get feedback from people you trust. Not Mom and Dad.
  • Get your music to people. Put it on-line--send it to college and local radio stations.
  • Listen to good music--especially songs that have become popular again covered by new artists. Figure out what make them good--form, instrumentation, words. But don't steal.
